Why today

Today's pick is Northwood Space, the Torrance, California startup that announced a 375 million dollar Series C on November 2, 2026, co-led by Andreessen Horowitz and DFJ Growth, with a financing arrangement from HSBC. The round values Northwood at 2 billion dollars, following a 100 million dollar Series B in January 2026 and a 6.3 million dollar initial round in 2024, and arrives on the heels of a nearly 50 million dollar U.S. Space Force contract to help modernize the country's satellite control network. Chief executive Bridgit Mendler, a former Disney Channel actress who left acting to study at MIT and Harvard Law School, co-founded Northwood on the bet that ground infrastructure, not rockets or satellites, is the real bottleneck holding back the space industry, and the company's electronically steered phased array antennas are designed to be mass produced rather than custom built for each site. The same stretch of days produced a run of other notable rounds: Trajectory, a Stanford founder team's AI post training platform used by legal and financial AI firms Harvey and Rogo, raised a 45 million dollar Series A led by Sequoia with Nvidia participating; Munich based Hypersonica raised a 100 million euro Series B co-led by Lightspeed and General Catalyst to build hypersonic long range missiles for Europe; London's LO:TECH raised a 12 million dollar Series A led by MMC for trading infrastructure spanning traditional and digital asset markets; and Estonian startup Roleo, from Veriff co-founder Janer Gorohhov, raised a 2.9 million euro round led by Practica Capital for its free AI career agent. Northwood stands out because a government customer as demanding as the Space Force is already betting on its hardware, its valuation has doubled in under a year, and it is tackling a problem, ground infrastructure, that is unglamorous enough that few well funded competitors have targeted it directly.

Problem

Satellites generate exponentially more data every year, but the ground stations that let them talk to Earth have not kept pace. Traditional ground stations rely on large, mechanically pointed dishes that take months to build, can only track one satellite at a time, and lock operators into whichever provider has a usable time slot nearby. That scarcity forces satellite operators to pay premium rates for limited downlink windows, delaying everything from weather forecasts to Space Force missions. Northwood argues that as satellite counts keep climbing, the real bottleneck is not rockets or spacecraft, it is the unglamorous network of ground antennas needed to get their data down to Earth.

Product

Northwood builds ground stations using electronically steered, multi beam phased array antennas with no moving parts, which can be deployed in hours rather than months and can track and hand off between several satellites in low, medium, and geostationary orbit at once. The company sells this as ground station capacity as a service, so operators can buy downlink time the way they buy cloud compute rather than building and maintaining their own dishes. Northwood says it has no satellite operations of its own, which it argues makes it a neutral vendor rather than a provider that might also compete with its customers for business or access to their data.

Traction

Northwood's new round follows a nearly 50 million dollar contract with the U.S. Space Force to help modernize the country's Satellite Control Network, a sign that a government customer with exacting reliability requirements is willing to bet on the startup's hardware. The company's prior 100 million dollar Series B in January 2026 came after it successfully connected a prototype antenna to Planet's satellites, an early proof point that its phased array hardware works with an established commercial satellite operator. The new 375 million dollar round values Northwood at 2 billion dollars, and the company says the funding will go toward fulfilling existing contracts and expanding its ground network further.

Team

Chief executive Bridgit Mendler co-founded Northwood after a prior career as a Disney Channel actress and singer known for Good Luck Charlie. Mendler left acting to study at the MIT Media Lab, a path that started with a teenage visit while filming a movie in Massachusetts, and later attended Harvard Law School. She has described Northwood's strategy as deliberately tackling an unglamorous problem, building ground infrastructure, rather than a flashier part of the space industry, arguing that ground capacity, not rockets or satellites, is what will bottleneck the industry's growth if nobody invests in fixing it.

Funding

Northwood raised 375 million dollars in a Series C co-led by Andreessen Horowitz and DFJ Growth, with a financing arrangement from HSBC, valuing the company at 2 billion dollars. Andreessen Horowitz also co-led Northwood's 100 million dollar Series B in January 2026, alongside Washington Harbour Partners, Alpine Space Ventures and Founders Fund. The company launched in 2024 with a 6.3 million dollar round backed by Founders Fund, Andreessen Horowitz and Also Capital. The Series C was announced November 2, 2026, and Northwood said it would use the funding to keep building out its ground station network and fulfilling existing contracts, including its Space Force work.

Competitors

Northwood's most direct competitors are AWS Ground Station, Norwegian ground network operator KSAT, Italy's Leaf Space, and Atlas Space Operations, all of which sell satellite operators access to ground antennas rather than requiring them to build their own. Northwood's pitch is that, unlike AWS Ground Station or satellite operator Intelsat, it runs no competing satellite business, so customers need not worry about their ground provider also competing with them for data or market share. It also argues its electronically steered phased arrays, which track and hand off between multiple satellites without repointing a dish, serve more customers per site than rivals relying on mechanically tracked antennas.

VC lens

Would YC fund it? Yes: a government customer as exacting as the Space Force validating the hardware, a founder who has already closed two major rounds with Andreessen Horowitz in under two years, and a bottleneck that gets worse every year as more satellites launch are exactly the kind of inflection point YC looks for, even though ground station hardware is a far more capital intensive bet than the software companies YC usually backs.

Biggest risk: Northwood is competing against AWS Ground Station, a unit of a company with far more capital and existing cloud customer relationships to bundle ground infrastructure into, and against satellite operators that may ultimately choose to build their own antenna networks rather than pay a third party, leaving Northwood's 2 billion dollar valuation dependent on convincing both commercial operators and government agencies to standardize on its hardware instead of building in house.
