Why today
Melbourne's Amber Electric announced a €49M (~$56M) Series E on September 21, led by Morgan Stanley Investment Management's climate-focused 1GT strategy and nearly 2x oversubscribed, to push its battery-automation software deeper into Europe. What makes it the standout of the day isn't the round size — it's the traction underneath it: Amber already automates more than half of Australia's home batteries and calls itself the country's largest virtual power plant, and its software already powers a live commercial product (E.ON Next's smart battery tariff in the UK), not just a pilot.
Problem
Australia and the UK are both in the middle of a residential solar-and-battery boom, but most installed batteries just charge and discharge on fixed schedules, leaving the arbitrage value between cheap, renewables-glut electricity and expensive peak-price electricity unclaimed. At grid scale that idle capacity is also a missed opportunity: more orchestrated household flexibility means less renewable curtailment and fewer peaker plants needed to cover demand spikes.
Product
Amber's SmartShift software connects to a household's battery, solar and EV, forecasts real-time wholesale electricity prices and the household's own consumption, and automatically times charging and discharging to capture that price spread — effectively turning each home into a node in an AI-orchestrated virtual power plant. It's sold as a flat A$22/month subscription rather than a cut of the savings, with Amber claiming typical customer value well above $1,000/year; the company doesn't manufacture batteries or panels, just the optimization layer on top.
Traction
Amber says it now automates more than 50% of Australia's enrolled home batteries — up from roughly 40% a year ago — across 40,000+ paying subscribers, and calls its network the country's largest VPP. It has already moved past the pilot stage internationally: its tech underpins E.ON Next's smart battery tariff, live in the UK since March 2026, and it's also building Australia's first residential vehicle-to-grid (V2G) offering.
Team
Co-founders and co-CEOs Chris Thompson and Dan Adams met in 2013 at Boston Consulting Group in Melbourne — Adams advising utilities through the energy transition, Thompson working in consumer and tech — and sketched Amber's business model together while traveling in Ecuador in 2017, giving them close to a decade of energy-market-specific experience heading into this raise.
Funding
€49M (~$56M) Series E led by Morgan Stanley Investment Management's 1GT climate strategy, with participation from existing partner E.ON plus prior investors ETF Partners and Innovation Victoria. The round was reported nearly twice oversubscribed and brings Amber's disclosed equity funding to roughly A$209M since its 2017 founding, following a $45M Series D in June 2025.
Competitors
In Australia, Amber competes with retailer-run VPP programs from AGL and Origin Energy and with independent battery-optimization rivals like Evergen and Reposit Power; globally it sits alongside hardware-makers' own software such as Tesla's Autobidder. Amber's stated differentiation is charging a flat subscription rather than a cut of savings, and exposing real-time wholesale prices directly to consumers instead of smoothing them into a fixed retail tariff — a model that depends on continued regulatory access to wholesale markets.
VC lens
Would YC fund it? Not at this stage — it's a proven, revenue-generating Series E business well past YC's normal entry point — but the founding wedge (flat-fee software that passes wholesale energy prices straight to consumers) is exactly the overlooked-vertical-SaaS idea YC likes at seed.
Biggest risk: Amber's edge depends on continued access to real-time wholesale electricity markets and favorable demand-response regulation; as utilities, retailers and hardware makers (Tesla, SolarEdge, big energy retailers) build automation directly into their own batteries and inverters, Amber's software-only, subscription-based moat could get squeezed from both ends.
