Why today
Island's $400 million Series F, announced September 24, stood out on a day that also produced a $340 million raise for healthcare-AI scribe Heidi Health and a $75 million round for AI data infrastructure startup Firecrawl, because the numbers behind it are unusually concrete for a private cybersecurity company: roughly $200 million in annual revenue growing near 100 percent a year, more than 450 customers including eight of the world's ten largest banks, and headcount that doubled to 1,000 people in a year. The round more than doubles Island's 2024 valuation of $3 billion, led by Evolution Equity Partners with a long list of existing backers including Sequoia, Coatue and Insight Partners returning to write bigger checks, and it arrives as Island repositions its browser as an agentic control plane meant to police AI agents the same way it already polices human employees.
Problem
Corporate work now happens almost entirely inside a browser tab, yet the browser itself has long been the weakest link in enterprise security, letting sensitive data leak through copy-paste, downloads, screenshots and unmanaged extensions regardless of what firewalls or endpoint agents a company runs. Contractors, BYOD devices and SaaS sprawl make the problem worse, since IT teams often cannot install traditional security agents on devices they do not own. The rise of AI agents that click, type and browse on a worker's behalf adds a new twist: those actions need the same audit trail and policy enforcement as a human, but through channels most security stacks were never built to see.
Product
Island builds a Chromium-based enterprise browser that enforces data-loss-prevention, access and compliance policies directly at the point of work, without requiring a separate endpoint agent, so it can secure contractor laptops and BYOD devices that IT does not fully control. With the Series F, Island is extending that same policy engine into what it calls an agentic control plane, applying one consistent set of rules and an audit trail across browsers, endpoints, applications, networks and data, whether the action originates from a human or an AI agent operating autonomously inside those same workflows.
Traction
Island says it now serves more than 450 customers spanning every industry vertical and company size, including Fortune 1000 enterprises, government agencies and universities, with named customers including Pfizer, Chipotle, American Airlines and eight of the world's ten largest banks. The company has grown revenue to roughly $200 million annually, expanding at close to 100 percent year over year, and has scaled headcount to about 1,000 employees, up from roughly 500 a year earlier. CEO Mike Fey has said the company plans to add another 500 employees by mid-2027 to support that growth.
Team
Island was co-founded in 2020 by CEO Mike Fey, the former president and chief operating officer of Symantec, and CTO Dan Amiga, a veteran of Israel's IDF 8200 signals-intelligence unit who previously built remote-browser-isolation company Fireglass, which Symantec acquired for a reported $250 million in 2017. That prior exit and Fey's enterprise security pedigree gave the pair credibility with large enterprise buyers from Island's earliest days, a factor investors have repeatedly cited across the company's funding rounds as it scaled from stealth to a $6.4 billion valuation in roughly five years.
Funding
Island's $400 million Series F, announced September 24, was led by Evolution Equity Partners and values the company at $6.4 billion, more than double the roughly $3 billion valuation it held in 2024. Returning and new backers in the round include Prysm Capital, Sequoia Capital, Coatue Management, Cyberstarts, Insight Partners, J.P. Morgan Growth Equity Partners, Alta Park Capital, Georgian and G Squared, alongside a personal investment from cybersecurity entrepreneur Dmitri Alperovitch. The raise follows a $250 million round in March 2025 at nearly $5 billion and brings Island's total funding to more than $1 billion since its 2020 launch.
Competitors
Island's most direct rival, Talon Cyber Security, was acquired by Palo Alto Networks in 2023 for roughly $625 million and rebranded as Prisma Access Browser, while Google Chrome Enterprise and Microsoft Edge for Business have added zero-trust and data-loss-prevention features of their own without matching the depth of purpose-built enterprise browsers. Island's pitch is that it wins on contractor access and BYOD use cases at regulated organizations where installing a traditional endpoint agent is not an option. Its bigger long-term competitive test is the newly announced agentic control plane, where it will face both browser-security peers and the AI agent platforms it is trying to govern.
VC lens
Would YC fund it? Yes without hesitation on the numbers alone: roughly $200 million in revenue growing near 100 percent a year with repeat, security-credentialed founders is the kind of concrete evidence that would clear YC's bar many times over, though at a $6.4 billion valuation this is squarely a growth-equity story rather than the earliest-stage bets YC itself writes checks into.
Biggest risk: Island's expansion from enterprise browser into policing AI agents pits it against both entrenched browser rivals like Palo Alto's Prisma Access Browser and Chrome Enterprise, and a fast-moving field of AI agent security and observability startups that may define the category on their own terms. If enterprises standardize on governance tools built by the AI agent platforms themselves rather than a browser vendor, Island's newest growth bet could underperform even if its core browser business stays healthy.
