Pick of the day
Euclyd
AI inference chips built to be about 100x more power-efficient than Nvidia's newest silicon.
Why today
Eindhoven-based Euclyd came out of near-stealth on September 14–15 with a €200M+ ($231M) Series A co-led by Samsung Electronics, Somerset Capital Partners, EQT's Scaleup Europe Fund and Innovation Industries, nearly double the €100M the founder was targeting as recently as April. Samsung isn't just an investor; it is also manufacturing the first chips in South Korea, an unusual dual role that signals a real hedge against Nvidia's GPU-plus-HBM dominance. The round also installs Peter Wennink, ASML's CEO for over a decade, as chairman.
Problem
Enterprise AI inference is bottlenecked by power draw, cost and data-center footprint, not raw model intelligence. Nvidia's GPU-plus-HBM architecture dominates while data centers hit real power ceilings and enterprises struggle to make inference profitable at scale.
Product
Euclyd's CRAFTWERK architecture places 16,384 custom SIMD processors directly alongside proprietary Ultra Bandwidth Memory instead of the standard GPU-plus-adjacent-memory layout. The rack-scale CWS 32 targets about 8,000 TB/s bandwidth, 1 exaflop of compute and 32TB of memory at about 125kW, with a claimed (self-reported, unverified) 100x power-efficiency edge over Nvidia's newest Vera Rubin chips.
Traction
Pre-commercial: first silicon is in manufacturing now, with first deliveries targeted for 2027 to two prospective customers and a full system in 2028. Previously named prospects include ASML, Airbus, Rheinmetall and Thales.
Team
Founder and CEO Bernardo Kastrup (PhD in computer engineering, 15 years at ASML, sold prior chip startup Silicon Hive to Intel) leads a founding team of four, backed by chairman Peter Wennink (ex-ASML CEO) and advisor Federico Faggin, co-creator of the first commercial microprocessor.
Funding
€200M+ Series A co-led by Samsung, Somerset Capital, EQT's Scaleup Europe Fund and Innovation Industries. Samsung doubles as the manufacturing partner.
Competitors
Groq (absorbed into Nvidia for $20B in late 2025), Cerebras ($23B valuation, Mayo Clinic deployment) and fellow Eindhoven startup Axelera AI ($454M raised). The real competitor is Nvidia's 20-year CUDA software moat, not any single chip rival.
VC lens
Would YC fund it? No: this is a credentialed, capital-intensive deep-tech Series A with strategic corporate backing, well past seed stage.
Biggest risk: CUDA lock-in, the same software moat that has absorbed past "Nvidia killers", plus unverified efficiency claims with no shipped silicon until 2027.
