Why today

Helsinki's Verda (formerly DataCrunch) announced an oversubscribed $189M/€161M Series B on September 22, led by Emergence Capital, pushing its valuation past $1B and making it Europe's newest AI-cloud unicorn. It stood out from a busy 48 hours of funding news, including a $350M Snorkel AI round and a $12M Nexstrom seed, because of what's underneath the number: Verda says it is cash-flow positive with a $165M annualized revenue run rate, a rare claim in a sector where rivals routinely burn hundreds of millions before break-even, and it is doing it on Nordic renewable power while founder Ruben Bryon says early investors told him the GPU-cloud business was simply too capital intensive, too early and difficult to attack from Europe.

Problem

ML teams need large blocks of GPU compute fast, but the big three hyperscalers (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) are expensive, slow to provision, and built around enterprise procurement processes that frustrate researchers who wanted GPUs immediately. European companies face an added constraint: data residency and regulatory requirements that push them toward providers inside the EU rather than US-headquartered clouds, in a market still short on credible local alternatives.

Product

Verda runs its own vertically integrated GPU data centers, currently in Finland and expanding into Iceland, the UK, US and Asia, powered by cheap Nordic renewable energy, paired with a self-serve software platform for training and deploying ML models. Because it owns the data centers, networking and software stack rather than reselling capacity, Verda claims pricing up to 90% below AWS, Azure and Google Cloud, with instant provisioning aimed at developers who don't want to go through hyperscaler sales cycles.

Traction

Verda reports an annualized revenue run rate of $165M as of July 2026, up from roughly $100M at the start of the year, and says it is cash-flow positive, a genuine outlier in a sector defined by heavy pre-revenue capex. Named clients include Nokia, 1X, ExpressVPN and Freepik. The company plans to scale to more than 250 megawatts of operating capacity by 2027 as it expands beyond the Nordics. One independent analysis flagged a caveat: the revenue figures are self-reported snapshots without disclosed contract duration, customer concentration or gross margins.

Team

Verda was founded in 2020 by Ruben Bryon, a Belgian engineer who built the company's first server rack in a garage in Helsinki after growing frustrated, as an ML-adjacent builder, with the cost and complexity of provisioning GPUs from major clouds. The company operated as DataCrunch until rebranding to Verda in late 2025. It is a solo-founder, deeply technical origin story rather than a serial-founder pedigree play.

Funding

$189M/€161M Series B led by Emergence Capital, with Supermicro, MUFG Innovation Partners, Nordic pension insurer Varma, Lifeline Ventures, 6 Degrees Capital, byFounders and Finnish state investor Tesi participating. The round was oversubscribed and values Verda above $1B. It follows a €55M Series A in November 2025 and a €100M round earlier in 2026, taking total funding (equity plus debt) past $450M in roughly a year.

Competitors

Verda sits in the crowded neocloud GPU category alongside UK-based Nscale ($3.6B+ raised, $14.6B valuation), Nasdaq-listed CoreWeave ($99.4B revenue backlog), San Jose's Lambda ($5.9B valuation, said to be IPO-bound), plus Nebius and Crusoe. Verda's pitch is profitability plus European data residency and up to 90% lower pricing, but every rival in that list is now also fighting for the same constrained pool of Nvidia GPU supply.

VC lens

Would YC fund it? Not at Series B, since GPU-cloud capex is the opposite of YC's light-capital thesis, but the founding wedge (a frustrated ML researcher building simple, instantly-provisioned GPU access) is precisely the scrappy, underserved-developer problem YC backs at pre-seed.

Biggest risk: Verda's headline ARR and cash-flow-positive claims are self-reported without audited detail on customer concentration, contract length or margins, and it now has to convert a short-term Nvidia-supply-driven demand spike into durable, competitively priced returns on hundreds of millions of dollars of infrastructure spend, against rivals with far deeper war chests.
