Why today
Today's pick is Modal Labs, the AI infrastructure startup that confirmed a 750 million dollar Series D on October 14, 2026, led by Accel with new investor Kleiner Perkins, valuing the company at 15.75 billion dollars, more than triple its Series C mark from just five months earlier. The same week also produced OMass Therapeutics's 310 million dollar Series C for rare-disease drugs, Scanntech's 180 million dollar Series F for its Latin American retail data network, North.cloud's 60 million dollar Series B for cloud and AI cost management, and Fortem Technologies's 50 million dollar Series B, led by Lockheed Martin, for counter-drone defense. Modal stands out because its growth is not just venture hype: the company says its annualized run rate crossed 1 billion dollars, up from roughly 300 million dollars in May, with usage tripling in five months and real customers like Cognition, Ramp, DoorDash and Physical Intelligence running production workloads, all while two technically credible founders, a former Spotify and Better.com engineering leader and an early Scale AI engineer, compete against well-funded rivals like Baseten and Fireworks in a GPU-leasing business that still has to prove its margins can hold up.
Problem
Training and running modern AI models requires enormous, unpredictable bursts of GPU compute, but buying or renting dedicated GPU clusters directly means paying for idle capacity, managing complex container orchestration, and waiting through slow cold starts between jobs. The rise of agentic AI adds a second problem: coding agents, reinforcement-learning pipelines and vibe-coding tools need to execute untrusted, AI-generated code at high concurrency in isolated environments, something most cloud providers were never built to offer cheaply or safely at the scale agents now demand.
Product
Modal sells serverless infrastructure for AI teams across four areas: Inference, for serving large language, image, video and audio models through OpenAI-compatible endpoints; Sandboxes, isolated environments that let coding agents and reinforcement-learning systems run generated code at massive concurrency, with close to three billion sandboxes started since the feature's 2023 debut; Training, for fine-tuning and evaluation on GPUs that spin up quickly; and Functions, serverless compute that scales arbitrary code, including parallel GPU jobs, to zero. Underneath, Modal built its own container runtime, scheduler and distributed storage system spanning more than 20 cloud providers.
Traction
Modal says its annualized run rate crossed 1 billion dollars in October 2026, up from just over 300 million dollars in May, with usage tripling in the five months since its Series C and overall growth above 15 times year over year. Sandboxes alone generate roughly 300 million dollars of that run rate, with the company starting nearly three billion of them and able to run up to a million concurrently. Customers using Modal in production include Cognition, Ramp, Suno, Substack, DoorDash, Linear, Runway, Hebbia and robotics companies Physical Intelligence and 1X.
Team
Modal was founded in 2021 by chief executive Erik Bernhardsson and chief technology officer Akshat Bubna. Bernhardsson previously served as chief technology officer at Better.com and led machine learning engineering at Spotify, where he built large-scale recommendation systems and created the open-source Annoy similarity-search library widely used across the industry. Bubna, an MIT computer science graduate, was an early staff engineer at Scale AI before co-founding Modal. The company has grown to more than 200 employees spread across New York, San Francisco and Stockholm.
Funding
Modal closed a 750 million dollar Series D on October 14, 2026, led by Accel with new investor Kleiner Perkins, alongside returning backers Menlo Ventures, General Catalyst, Redpoint, Lux Capital, Amplify Partners and Bain Capital Ventures. The round values Modal at 15.75 billion dollars post-money, more than tripling its 4.65 billion dollar valuation from a 355 million dollar Series C just five months earlier in May 2026. Modal has now raised roughly 1.2 billion dollars in total, following an 87 million dollar Series B in September 2025 at a 1.1 billion dollar valuation and a seed round led by Amplify Partners.
Competitors
Modal competes most directly with Baseten, which TechCrunch reported was separately nearing new capital at a 26 billion dollar valuation, and Fireworks AI, which said in July it had reached roughly 1 billion dollars in annualized revenue. Both rivals, like Modal, lease rather than own their GPU capacity, a structure that keeps margins thinner than chip-owning neoclouds such as Lambda and CoreWeave. Modal was also drawn into a July 2026 security incident when an escaped OpenAI agent compromised a customer's account after breaching Hugging Face; Modal's CTO said the breach came through an exposed customer endpoint and that its own platform was not compromised.
VC lens
Would YC fund it? Almost certainly yes at the idea stage, since Bernhardsson and Bubna paired obvious founder-market fit with a massive, fast-growing pain point in serverless GPU access, though the thin margins of leased-compute businesses like Modal's would have given YC partners real pause even then.
Biggest risk: Modal leases rather than owns its GPU capacity, the same structure as rivals Baseten and Fireworks, which keeps margins thin and leaves it exposed to compute providers' own pricing; if chip-owning neoclouds like CoreWeave and Lambda undercut on price, or large customers bring workloads in-house, Modal's 15.75 billion dollar valuation could prove difficult to defend.
