Why today

Today's pick is Multiply Labs, the San Francisco robotics company that announced a 75 million dollar Series B on October 6, 2026, led by Patrick Soon-Shiong's NantWorks, with new investors AstraZeneca, Lingotto, Teradyne and Strange Ventures joining returning backers Casdin Capital, Lux Capital, Fifty Years, Ora Global and Founders Fund. Against a thin stretch of fresh funding news that included a roughly four million dollar seed for a Bengaluru wealthtech platform, a ten million dollar Series A for a dermatology-focused patient-access AI, a twenty-two million dollar Series A for a customer-personalization startup and a ninety-seven million dollar round for an energy-efficient chip spinout, Multiply Labs stands out because it spent nine years building toward an actual paying commercial contract in one of the hardest, most capital-intensive corners of biotech before a brand-name strategic investor backed it.

Problem

Cell and gene therapy manufacturing is still largely manual: technicians perform timed, repetitive steps such as cell isolation, activation, transduction and expansion by hand inside cleanrooms, a process that is slow, expensive and prone to batch-to-batch inconsistency. That manual bottleneck caps how many patients a given facility can treat and keeps production costs high enough that many advanced therapies remain limited to wealthy health systems and small patient populations. The same constraint extends to other biologics, including antibodies, viral vectors and mRNA, where manufacturers rely on a patchwork of specialized instruments that were never designed to run as a single automated line.

Product

Multiply Labs builds enclosed, GMP-compliant robotic systems that automate a manufacturer's existing instrument ecosystem rather than replacing it with one proprietary machine, timing and sequencing the repetitive steps technicians currently perform by hand. The company started with cell and gene therapy and says its robotic clusters can cut cost per dose and multiply throughput compared with manual production, though those figures are the company's own claims rather than independently verified results. It is now extending the same closed-system approach to antibody, viral-vector and mRNA manufacturing, aiming to let pharmaceutical and biologics companies run the platform themselves instead of outsourcing production to a contract manufacturer.

Traction

Multiply Labs has raised more than 100 million dollars since its 2016 founding and converted part of that into paying commercial relationships rather than staying research-only. Its first commercial sale was an agreement with Retro Biosciences worth up to 85 million dollars to automate manufacturing for Retro's age-related-disease cell therapies. The company has also struck collaborations with Legend Biotech on cell therapy automation and with Wilson Wolf on automating G-Rex bioreactors, alongside partners including Akron Bio, Charles River, Fedegari and GenScript. Those commercial deals, more than any single disclosed metric, are the clearest evidence that biologics manufacturers are willing to hand production over to Multiply's robots.

Team

Multiply Labs was co-founded in 2016 by chief executive Fred Parietti, who holds a PhD in mechanical engineering from MIT focused on the design and control of autonomous robotic systems, alongside co-founder Alice Melocchi. The company's early capital included a 3.5 million dollar seed round backed by Y Combinator, and it has spent nine years building toward commercial deployment rather than chasing a fast exit. That slow, hardware-heavy path is unusual for a venture-backed startup, but it is also what let the company land a strategic investor of Patrick Soon-Shiong's standing once its first commercial contract was already signed.

Funding

Multiply Labs announced a 75 million dollar Series B on October 6, 2026, led by Patrick Soon-Shiong's NantWorks, the healthcare and technology group the billionaire founded. New investors AstraZeneca, Lingotto, Teradyne and Strange Ventures joined returning backers Casdin Capital, Lux Capital, Fifty Years, Ora Global and Founders Fund. The round brings the company's total funding to more than 100 million dollars since 2016 and gives it a strategic, pharma-adjacent and industrial-automation investor base heading into its push to scale beyond cell and gene therapy into antibodies, viral vectors and mRNA manufacturing.

Competitors

Multiply Labs competes against well-capitalized rivals chasing the same cell and gene therapy automation opportunity. Cellares, which last raised 257 million dollars, offers a modular cGMP platform built around closed, single-use cartridges for industrial-scale manufacturing. London-based Ori Biotech automates and standardizes manufacturing as customers move from preclinical process development to commercial scale. Established tools maker Miltenyi Biotec remains the default choice for many labs' individual instruments. Multiply's pitch is that it automates a customer's entire existing equipment ecosystem inside one closed robotic system rather than one unit operation at a time, but it will need more deals like Retro Biosciences to prove that approach wins against better-funded, more established alternatives.

VC lens

Would YC fund it? Mixed-to-yes: a decade of hardware grind that ended in a real paying commercial contract and a strategic-heavy Series B shows staying power most biotech robotics startups never reach, but the capital intensity and nine-year runway to get here cut against YC's usual speed-to-traction bar.

Biggest risk: Multiply Labs is selling capital equipment into an industry that moves slowly and already has entrenched, well-funded rivals in Cellares and Ori Biotech pursuing the same automation opportunity. If its real-world cost and throughput gains don't clear the bar pharma manufacturers need to switch away from existing contract manufacturers, the company's commercial pipeline beyond its one disclosed deal with Retro Biosciences could stall despite nine years of development and a fresh 75 million dollars in the bank.
