Why today
Today's pick is Universal Quantum, the Brighton, UK quantum computing firm that said on October 8, 2026 it had closed what it and the University of Sussex both called a record Series A for a UK quantum computing company, more than 100 million dollars. The window also included a reported 400 million dollar Series A for a stealth nuclear startup backed by Vivek Ramaswamy, a 200 million dollar fusion Series B, a 50 million dollar seed round for a brain-reading wearable, and a 30 million dollar seed round for AI trading agents. Universal Quantum stands out because its founders, rather than pivoting from an adjacent field, co-authored the original 2017 academic blueprint for a large-scale trapped-ion quantum computer, and the company has already turned that research into a real government contract rather than just a lab demo.
Problem
Trapped-ion quantum computers hold some of the best qubit quality in the industry, but the dominant approach wires every ion trap together with lasers, a method that gets harder and more error-prone to align as systems add chips and qubits. Scaling any quantum computer past a few hundred qubits to the millions needed for fault-tolerant, commercially useful machines means solving how physically separate processors talk to each other without losing coherence or accumulating errors. Whoever solves that interconnect problem cheaply and reliably, rather than whoever has the most qubits today, is positioned to win the next decade of quantum hardware.
Product
Universal Quantum builds modular trapped-ion quantum computers using a patented technology it calls UQConnect, which physically shuttles trapped-ion qubits between silicon chiplets using microwave and micro-electric-field links rather than laser-based coupling. The architecture is designed so additional chip modules can be bolted on to scale qubit count without re-engineering the whole machine. The company's pitch is that this chiplet approach, borrowed conceptually from how classical semiconductor packaging scales, sidesteps the alignment and crosstalk problems that make laser-linked systems harder to grow, while keeping the high gate fidelities trapped-ion qubits are known for.
Traction
The company's clearest proof point predates this round: in November 2022 Germany's Aerospace Center (DLR) awarded its German subsidiary a 67 million euro contract, among the largest government quantum computing commitments in Europe, to build a single-chip and then a roughly 100-qubit multi-chip trapped-ion machine at DLR's Hamburg site as part of Germany's national Quantum Computing Initiative. The company says it has also done government-facing work in the UK. Total funding now tops 125 million dollars, and the new round is earmarked partly to speed delivery on that multi-year German build alongside expansion into the US and Japan.
Team
Universal Quantum was founded in 2018 by Sebastian Weidt and Winfried Hensinger, who together co-authored the first detailed academic blueprint for a large-scale trapped-ion quantum computer, published in 2017 while both were at the University of Sussex. That paper is the technical basis the company has spent seven years trying to commercialize, giving it a research pedigree that is unusually direct, the founders are not adapting someone else's architecture, they are building the one they designed. The company has grown out of its Sussex roots into a dedicated Hamburg subsidiary to deliver the DLR contract.
Funding
The Series A, announced October 8, 2026, was co-led by DCVC and quantum-focused investor Firgun Ventures, with Singapore sovereign investor EDBI, Japanese asset manager Integral GlobalTech, and Roblox founder Dave Baszucki also participating; Lazard advised on the deal. The university and company both described it as the largest Series A ever raised by a UK quantum computing firm and a record for a Sussex spinout. Funds are earmarked for accelerating delivery of the German government contract and for expanding commercial and research partnerships in the United States, Japan, and Germany.
Competitors
Universal Quantum's closest technical rivals are the other trapped-ion players, Quantinuum, which spun out as its own company and went public in mid-2026 with real but still small revenue against a large net loss, and IonQ, which has pulled ahead on recognized revenue but seen a volatile stock. Photonic rival PsiQuantum and neutral-atom companies like Atom Computing and QuEra are chasing the same scaling problem with different physics. Universal Quantum's bet is that its chiplet-based interconnect undercuts the laser-alignment bottleneck those rivals face, but none of the approaches, including its own, has yet produced a fault-tolerant machine at commercial scale.
VC lens
Would YC fund it? Yes, on team and technical credibility: founders who wrote the field's own blueprint and then landed a nine-figure government contract to build it are a rare combination, though the long, capital-intensive road from a 100-qubit government machine to a commercially useful quantum computer is exactly the kind of bet that tests investor patience.
Biggest risk: Universal Quantum's entire architecture rests on an unproven-at-scale bet, that shuttling ions between silicon chiplets with microwave and electric-field links will keep working as chip counts climb into the thousands, something no trapped-ion company has demonstrated commercially yet. It is also racing well-funded, now-public rivals like Quantinuum and IonQ that already have real revenue, and much of its near-term credibility rests on delivering a multi-year German government contract on time.
