Why today
Today's pick is Hyperbolic, the San Francisco AI compute marketplace that announced a 30 million dollar Series A-1 on October 27, 2026, led by Walden Catalyst, the venture firm founded by Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan and former Samsung president Young Sohn, with Dell Technologies Capital, General Catalyst, Vista Equity Partners and Cambium Capital also participating. The round brings Hyperbolic's total funding to roughly 50 million dollars and lands as AI companies everywhere are fighting over scarce GPU capacity, which Hyperbolic wants to fix by aggregating supply from about 30 neocloud providers into one control plane rather than building its own data centers. The same 48 hours produced a wide spread of smaller rounds worth watching: embedded-connectivity platform Braid raised a 38 million dollar Series A, frontline-training platform Bites raised a 40 million dollar Series A, healthcare-finance startup Midstream Health raised a 20 million dollar Series A, and AI-agent monitoring startup Crux Labs raised an oversubscribed 6 million dollar round. Hyperbolic stands out because its backers include a sitting Big Tech CEO's own fund betting against the compute scarcity that his own company profits from, and because its long-term pitch, treating idle GPU capacity as a tradeable commodity like electricity, is a more structurally ambitious bet than most GPU-reseller stories.
Problem
Training and running AI models takes enormous amounts of GPU compute, but that capacity is scattered across dozens of neocloud providers, each with its own interface, pricing and availability quirks. Teams that need reliable compute end up juggling multiple vendor relationships, manually comparing prices across providers, and over-provisioning hardware to avoid outages, while a meaningful amount of GPU capacity worldwide sits idle because there is no efficient way to find and resell it. Hyperbolic argues this fragmentation wastes money on both sides of the market: buyers overpay for scarce capacity while holders of idle compute have no liquid market to offload it into, a mismatch that gets more expensive as AI workloads keep scaling.
Product
Hyperbolic's core product, Forge, is a control plane that pools GPU clusters from roughly 30 cloud providers, including neocloud partners WhiteFiber and Vector Core Compute, into one standardized capacity layer reachable through a single dashboard and API. Customers can provision, monitor and move AI workloads across providers without managing separate accounts for each one, and the company is building toward a resale layer that would let idle compute be bought and sold the way electricity trades on a grid, complete with spot pricing and hedging tools. The pitch is less about owning hardware and more about making GPU capacity that already exists easier to find, price and use efficiently.
Traction
Hyperbolic says more than 250,000 developers use its platform, including teams at fellow AI-infrastructure companies Modal, Higgsfield and Daytona, and that roughly 200 million dollars of compute capacity moves through its software annually. The four-year-old company, which expects to reach about 50 employees by year end, says it is already breaking even and is targeting 150 million dollars in annualized recurring revenue by the end of 2026. These figures are self-reported rather than independently audited, but the scale of claimed developer adoption and the caliber of the customer list point to genuine usage rather than a purely speculative early-stage product.
Team
Hyperbolic was founded in 2022 by CEO Jasper Zhang and CTO Yuchen Jin, who met that year before building the company together. Zhang holds a mathematics PhD from UC Berkeley, is a gold medalist at the Alibaba Global Math Competition and the Chinese Mathematical Olympiad, and worked as a quantitative researcher at Citadel Securities before co-founding Hyperbolic. Jin holds a computer science PhD from the University of Washington and previously led an engineering team at OctoAI building optimization tooling for AI models. The combination of a quantitative-finance background with distributed-systems engineering expertise lines up well with a company trying to turn GPU compute into something closer to a tradeable financial commodity.
Funding
Hyperbolic raised 30 million dollars in a Series A-1 round led by Walden Catalyst, the venture firm founded by Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan and former Samsung president Young Sohn, with Dell Technologies Capital, General Catalyst, Vista Equity Partners and Cambium Capital also participating. The round, announced October 27, 2026 and described by the company as oversubscribed, brings Hyperbolic's total funding to roughly 50 million dollars, following a 12 million dollar Series A led by Variant and Polychain Capital in December 2024 and a 7 million dollar seed round earlier that year. Hyperbolic has not disclosed a valuation for the new round or how the capital splits between software development and expanding its neocloud partner network.
Competitors
Hyperbolic sits in a market that includes GPU marketplaces like Vast.ai, reserved-capacity exchanges like SF Compute, and vertically integrated neoclouds like CoreWeave that run their own data centers rather than aggregating other providers' capacity. Hyperbolic's model is closer to SF Compute's supplier-network approach than to CoreWeave's owned-infrastructure one, betting that no single cloud or neocloud will win GPU supply outright, which leaves room for a neutral aggregation layer. That bet depends on the roughly 30 providers Hyperbolic currently aggregates continuing to treat it as a sales channel rather than building the same multi-cloud tooling themselves, and on hyperscalers like AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure not closing the fragmentation gap on their own.
VC lens
Would YC fund it? Yes: a tight two-founder team with legitimate quant and distributed-systems credentials, blue-chip strategic and financial backers including a sitting chipmaker CEO's own fund, and claimed breakeven economics at this stage make Hyperbolic a plausible bet, though the eventual pivot to a tradeable compute market is a much harder regulatory and liquidity problem than the current reselling business.
Biggest risk: Hyperbolic's entire model depends on neocloud providers continuing to let it resell their capacity rather than building equivalent multi-cloud orchestration themselves, and if GPU supply loosens as new capacity comes online, the scarcity premium that makes aggregation valuable today could shrink along with Hyperbolic's margins.
