Why today
Today's pick is Instinct, the invite-only personal AI agent from Spear Street Technology, whose 1 billion dollar Series C at a 10 billion dollar valuation is the loudest funding story of the last 48 hours. Announced this week and led by Sequoia Capital, Benchmark and Coatue, the round comes barely a month after Instinct raised 250 million dollars at 2.5 billion dollars, a roughly 4x jump in valuation in under five weeks on the strength of triple-digit-thousand user counts, 10 percent compounding daily growth, and more than a billion dollars a year in transaction volume already moving through the app. That combination of speed, scale and a 23-year-old founder with a strong research pedigree stood out against a busy day of otherwise solid but more incremental raises: SiMa.ai's 150 million dollar physical-AI chip round, Quartermaster's 140 million dollar maritime-intelligence raise, Outmarket's insurance-automation round, and Humanos's seed for AI-agent risk scoring.
Problem
Most people spend a meaningful chunk of every week on logistical overhead that doesn't require judgment so much as persistence: booking flights and restaurants, rebooking them when plans change, calling customer service to cancel a subscription, tracking a delivery, coordinating a schedule across other people's calendars. Existing chatbots can answer questions about these tasks but stop short of doing them, leaving the user to still open the app, make the call or fill in the form themselves. Instinct's bet is that the real unlock isn't a smarter chat window but an agent willing to act end to end, reached the way people already reach another human: by text or phone call.
Product
Instinct is reached by text message, WhatsApp or phone call rather than an app, and it connects to a user's email, messaging, calendar, screen, audio and location to take actions on their behalf: booking flights, restaurants and rides, ordering groceries, cancelling subscriptions, negotiating bills and handling email follow-up. It operates through a persistent cloud computer and stored account access, letting it act with comparatively few interruptions once a user has granted permissions. It launched a free, invite-only private beta in February 2026 that stayed under the radar until a burst of viral attention in early August, and it remains invite-only and unpriced today.
Traction
Instinct's user base passed 100,000 by mid-September while still invite-only and without a marketing budget, and the company has reported roughly 10 percent compounding daily growth in transaction volume. Users are already moving more than a billion dollars a year in spending through the agent, with travel bookings accounting for about half of that volume. That combination, real usage intensity on a small, gated user base, is what has driven the valuation from roughly 500 million dollars in early August to 2.5 billion dollars by late August and 10 billion dollars by late September, even though the product does not yet charge for access.
Team
Instinct is built by Spear Street Technology, Inc., registered in San Francisco in April 2026 by founder Noah Shinn, a 23-year-old former research scientist at Sierra and the first author of the widely cited Reflexion paper on self-reflective AI agents. His research background is a close match for what Instinct is trying to ship: an agent that has to plan, act and recover from mistakes autonomously rather than simply answer questions, and investors have repeatedly cited that founder-product fit alongside the growth numbers when justifying the pace of the valuation increases.
Funding
Instinct raised 1 billion dollars in a Series C round announced this week, led by Sequoia Capital, Benchmark and Coatue, at a valuation of 10 billion dollars. The round lands roughly five weeks after Instinct closed a 250 million dollar Series B at a 2.5 billion dollar valuation in late August 2026, itself a steep jump from an earlier valuation near 500 million dollars only weeks before that. The pace, four rounds' worth of valuation growth compressed into about a month, reflects investor urgency to get into a company whose usage metrics were compounding faster than typical due-diligence timelines could keep up with.
Competitors
Instinct's closest dedicated startup rivals are Wajo, Ollie and Poke, smaller personal-assistant products built around similar messaging-first interfaces; Poke's maker, the Interaction Company of California, agreed to be acquired by Cognition in July 2026. The bigger competitive threat is from platform incumbents pushing agentic assistants of their own: OpenAI's ChatGPT, xAI's Grok and Apple's Siri are all adding agent capabilities, and Meta has built an OpenClaw-like personal agent called Muse. Instinct's differentiation is combining a text-message interface, a persistent cloud computer, stored account access and a willingness to act with few interruptions, a bundle competitors have so far kept more separate.
VC lens
Would YC fund it? Almost certainly, if it weren't already worth 10 billion dollars: a 23-year-old technical founder with directly relevant research credentials, triple-digit-thousand users acquired with zero marketing spend, and 10 percent daily compounding growth is close to the platonic ideal of a YC-shaped outlier, though its capital-raising pace now looks more like a growth-stage sprint than an accelerator bet.
Biggest risk: Instinct has no revenue yet and is monetizing nothing while burning goodwill on trust: TechCrunch reported in August that beta users experienced retained data after disconnecting accounts, a successful prompt-injection attack via email, and unapproved actions taken on their behalf, and its original terms of service granted a perpetual, irrevocable license to user data before a public backlash forced a rewrite. With OpenAI, Meta, Apple and xAI all shipping competing agents, Instinct's edge depends on staying ahead on both capability and trust simultaneously, and a single serious security incident at this valuation would be difficult to recover from.
