Solcoa Industries
A nineteen-year-old founder's startup building America's first new rare-earth metalmaking process in 80 years, backed by a 75 million dollar seed round to construct a 500-tonne Nevada plant that could break China's grip on the metals inside every EV motor and defense magnet.

Why today
Today's pick is Solcoa Industries, whose 75 million dollar seed round, announced this week, stands out amid a busy few days of funding news spanning enterprise infrastructure, biotech and Gulf fintech. Led by Bain Capital Ventures with JPMorgan anchoring the debt piece, the round funds a Nevada plant aimed at breaking China's roughly 95 percent grip on rare earth metallization, the choke-point step that turns oxides into the metals inside every EV motor, drone and missile guidance system. What makes it the standout is the combination of a genuinely novel, faster and cleaner metalmaking process, a nineteen-year-old Thiel Fellow founder who spent his teenage years on molten-salt electrochemistry, and a dated 2027 production target addressing an urgent, well-documented national security gap, set against strong but more incremental rounds elsewhere: Clastix's sovereign Kubernetes seed, Prevision Medicine's precision oncology raise, Spiich's AI sales agents, and Barq's Saudi fintech unicorn round.
Problem
Rare earth metals sit at the center of a national security bottleneck that most Americans have only recently noticed. China controls roughly 95 percent of the world's capacity to convert refined rare earth oxides into usable metals, the metallization step that feeds magnet makers for electric motors, wind turbines, drones and missile guidance systems. Conventional molten-salt electrolysis is expensive, hazardous and notoriously hard to permit outside China, which has kept Western capacity almost nonexistent even as Beijing tightened export controls on seven heavy rare earths in April 2025 and expanded the list again that October, leaving defense and EV supply chains exposed.
Product
Solcoa has built an alternative to legacy molten-salt electrolysis: a pyrometallurgical process that shifts the heating load to electric current run through a molybdenum crucible inside a vacuum induction furnace, using halide-free chemistry that reaches reaction temperature in about thirty seconds. The company designs and builds its own modular reactors at its Alameda, California facility, and says the approach uses less energy, costs less and produces none of the toxic fluoride gases and perfluorocarbons that come with the conventional process. Output today is neodymium-praseodymium and samarium metal, the raw material for the permanent magnets used across electric motors and defense hardware.
Traction
Solcoa currently runs a pilot plant in Alameda producing about 10 tonnes of rare earth metal a year, one of the only Western facilities doing this kind of metallization at any scale. The new capital funds Solcoa One, a commercial plant in Nevada designed to reach 500 tonnes of annual NdPr and samarium capacity, which the company and its backers describe as the largest rare earth metallization operation outside China once built. Solcoa is targeting the start of operations in July 2027, giving it a concrete, dated milestone against which its scale-up claims can be measured.
Team
Solcoa was co-founded in 2025 by CEO Hooman Reza Nezhad, who grew up in Waterloo, Ontario, worked on resource technology at the University of Waterloo as a teenager, and won a two-year, 200,000 dollar Thiel Fellowship to pursue Solcoa full-time instead of enrolling at the University of Toronto; his earlier research spanned molten-salt electrochemistry and extracting oxygen and metals from Martian regolith. Co-founder Artem Yurkovskyi, 21, was named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list in Manufacturing and Industry. At 19 and 21, the pair are building a capital-intensive industrial company far younger than most peers in the sector.
Funding
Solcoa raised 75 million dollars in a seed round announced this week, split between 45 million dollars in equity led by Bain Capital Ventures, with Gigascale Capital, Long Journey, Felicis and Figma founder Dylan Field participating, and 30 million dollars in debt and equipment financing anchored by JPMorgan. Felicis general partner James Detweiler framed the bet as part of the firm's push to rebuild the domestic industrial capacity the United States depends on rather than imports. The capital is earmarked specifically for building and commissioning Solcoa One, the company's first commercial-scale metallization plant, in Nevada.
Competitors
Solcoa's closest comparisons are MP Materials, which mines and separates rare earth oxides at Mountain Pass, California and opened an integrated magnet plant in Northlake, Texas in 2025, and Lynas Rare Earths, which runs the only large-scale rare earth separation facility outside China. Both, along with magnet maker Noveon Magnetics, have received a combined share of more than 439 million dollars in Department of Defense awards since 2020 to build out separation and magnet capacity. Solcoa is narrower and later in the chain, focused specifically on the metallization step between oxide separation and magnet manufacturing, a bottleneck its larger, better-funded rivals still mostly skip.
VC lens
Would YC fund it? Probably not at the application stage: Solcoa is a capital-intensive industrial bet with a two-year hardware build-out, a poor match for YC's software-speed model, even though the underlying founder-market fit and national-security tailwinds are exactly the kind of counter-consensus story YC likes to highlight after the fact.
Biggest risk: Scaling an unproven pyrometallurgical process from a 10-tonne pilot to a 500-tonne commercial plant in under two years is a serious execution risk, and Solcoa will be competing for customers and defense contracts against MP Materials and Lynas, both already operating at far greater scale with hundreds of millions of dollars in Pentagon backing; a Chinese price war on rare earth metal could also squeeze margins before Solcoa One even reaches capacity.
