Why today
Today's pick is Bedrock Robotics, the San Francisco startup that announced a 600 million dollar Series C on October 26, 2026, co-led by CapitalG and Emergence Capital at a 4.1 billion dollar valuation, pushing its total funding to nearly 1 billion dollars just two years after founding. The company, built by Waymo veterans including CEO Boris Sofman, retrofits ordinary excavators and other construction machines with autonomy rather than building new vehicles, and it reached commercial operation on active job sites only about two months before this round closed, including a water treatment facility in Nevada, an earthwork site in Texas and a 1.2 million cubic yard civil sitework project with Zachry Construction. The round lands against a backdrop the company itself points to: the Associated Builders and Contractors estimates more than 40 percent of construction workers will retire within five years, and Bedrock says mastering an excavator by hand takes five years or more. The same 24 hours produced a smaller but global spread of deals: Indian brain-games platform Matiks raised a 10 million dollar pre-Series A led by General Catalyst, UK household-AI agent Nous raised 17 million dollars from Heartcore Capital and Mosaic Ventures, Leeds University spinout adsilico raised a 10 million pound Series A to simulate medical devices on virtual patients, and Finnish insect-protein maker Volare raised 7.1 million euros to scale its black soldier fly factory. Bedrock stands out because it has moved past demos into paid, real-world job sites inside two years of founding, in a construction industry facing a labor shortage that autonomy is now visibly starting to fill.
Problem
Heavy construction equipment like excavators remains almost entirely human-operated, and skilled operators are becoming scarce: the Associated Builders and Contractors estimates more than 40 percent of construction workers will retire within five years, and Bedrock says mastering an excavator takes five years or more of training. Construction firms face mounting project backlogs with too few experienced operators to run them, while existing automation efforts in the industry have mostly required buying entirely new, purpose-built autonomous machines rather than adapting the fleets contractors already own and depend on for daily operations.
Product
Bedrock sells a retrofit kit, not a new vehicle: cameras, LiDAR, GPS and onboard computing are added to existing excavators and other heavy equipment without permanent modification, giving contractors a path to autonomy without replacing their fleets. The system handles real-time mapping and planning so machines can dig, grade and move earth on active job sites alongside human crews. By retrofitting rather than manufacturing hardware from scratch, Bedrock can scale faster across whatever equipment brands a construction company already operates, lowering the switching cost that has slowed automation adoption in construction.
Traction
Bedrock's autonomous excavators are commercially operating at a Nevada water treatment facility, an earthwork site run by Champion Site Prep in Texas, and a 1.2 million cubic yard civil sitework project with Zachry Construction Corporation, reaching that commercial stage on active job sites roughly two months before this funding round closed. Arizona general contractor Haydon is its newest partner. The company has not disclosed revenue or a customer count, but moving from pilots to paid, multi-site commercial deployment within about two years of founding is what drew CapitalG and Emergence Capital to more than double its valuation from the 1.75 billion dollar Series B just eight months earlier.
Team
Bedrock was founded in 2024 by CEO Boris Sofman, who led Waymo's now-shuttered self-driving trucks program and earlier co-founded Anki Robotics, maker of the Cozmo robot, before it shut down in 2019. He is joined by CTO Kevin Peterson and VP of engineering and infrastructure Ajay Gummalla, both Waymo veterans, and VP of engineering and hardware Tom Eliaz, previously at Segment and Twilio. The team has since added VP of operations Amy Jones Satrom, formerly of Amazon, Nuro and Uber, and general counsel Lando Juarez, who previously led legal for Uber's autonomous mobility and delivery business, rounding out a leadership group with deep experience shipping autonomous systems at scale.
Funding
CapitalG and Emergence Capital co-led Bedrock's 600 million dollar Series C, announced October 26, 2026, at a 4.1 billion dollar valuation, with new investors US Innovative Technology Fund, Bessemer Venture Partners and Temasek joining alongside existing backers 8VC, Georgian, Valor Equity Partners, Xora, Eclipse, Perry Creek Capital and Nvidia. The round follows a 270 million dollar Series B led by CapitalG and the Valor Atreides AI Fund in February 2026 at a 1.75 billion dollar valuation, meaning Bedrock's valuation has more than doubled in eight months. The company has now raised nearly 1 billion dollars in total just over two years after its 2024 founding.
Competitors
Bedrock competes with purpose-built autonomous construction equipment makers and with the status quo of manually operated fleets that most contractors still run. Its retrofit approach is also being pursued by other construction-robotics entrants, but Bedrock's edge is a founding team with direct experience shipping Waymo's autonomy stack and an early lead in moving from pilots to paid, multi-site commercial work. The bigger competitive question is whether equipment manufacturers like Caterpillar or Komatsu eventually build autonomy directly into new machines, which would narrow the market for third-party retrofit kits like Bedrock's over time.
VC lens
Would YC fund it? Yes in spirit, since Bedrock is exactly the kind of deep-tech, labor-shortage-driven infrastructure bet investors chase, but the company is well past YC's typical stage, already valued at 4.1 billion dollars on a 600 million dollar Series C with Waymo-caliber founders and Nvidia on the cap table.
Biggest risk: Bedrock's retrofit model depends on construction firms trusting a third party to automate equipment they already own, and incumbent equipment makers could respond by building similar autonomy directly into new machines, which would squeeze the market for an add-on kit; its revenue and customer base also remain undisclosed just two months into commercial operation.
