Why today
Shanghai-based BCI-Sonics closed a RMB 200M (~$30M) Pre-Series A on September 22, co-led by HSG (formerly Sequoia China) and Yunqi Capital, taking its total disclosed funding to roughly RMB 300M since founding in 2025. What makes it today's standout against a day of solid but conventional rounds (a recruiting SaaS Series A, a heart-device growth round, a payments raise) is the bet itself: instead of Neuralink-style surgical implants, BCI-Sonics is trying to read and modulate deep brain activity from outside the skull using focused ultrasound, entering a field where China's government-backed BCI push and Sam Altman's newly funded Merge Labs are both racing toward the same non-invasive approach.
Problem
Brain-computer interfaces that could treat paralysis, Parkinson's disease and chronic pain, or eventually enable new human-machine communication, have mostly required implanting electrodes through open-skull surgery, as Neuralink and China's own StairMed and NeuroXess do. That confines BCI to a small population of patients willing to accept surgical risk and limits how quickly the technology can reach the market. A device that can read and stimulate deep brain structures from outside the skull would remove the single biggest barrier to scaling BCI beyond severe-disability cases.
Product
BCI-Sonics combines low-intensity focused ultrasound, which it says can stimulate deep brain regions with precision down to 1.5 millimetres, with multimodal external brain-signal sensing and AI-based neural decoding, aiming for a closed loop that both reads and writes neural activity without electrodes or surgery. The company is initially targeting neuromodulation for conditions such as Parkinson's disease and chronic pain, positioning the platform as a therapeutic device first, with broader brain-computer interface applications as the underlying technology matures.
Traction
BCI-Sonics has now raised close to RMB 300M (~$42M) in under a year and a half since its 2025 founding, moving from an angel round led by Matrix Partners China through an angel-plus round to this Pre-Series A led by HSG and Yunqi Capital, with Proxima Investment, Yuanhe Holdings, Xuhui Science and Technology Venture Capital and Deshi Investment joining and existing investors increasing their stakes. That is investor traction rather than clinical traction: public reporting on the round does not describe completed human trials or regulatory filings, so the technology is still earlier-stage than China's invasive BCI players, some of which have already reached implanted patients.
Team
Founder Dr. Li Xin holds a joint PhD in biomedical engineering from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Germany's Fraunhofer IGD Institute and previously served as China site leader for GE Healthcare's global R&D center before founding BCI-Sonics in 2025, giving the company a founder with both deep medical-device research credentials and large medtech operating experience.
Funding
RMB 200M (~$30M) Pre-Series A announced September 22, 2026, co-led by HSG (formerly Sequoia China) and Yunqi Capital, with Proxima Investment, Yuanhe Holdings, Xuhui Science and Technology Venture Capital and Deshi Investment participating, and existing angel investors Matrix Partners China and Delian Capital increasing their positions. That follows an angel-plus round co-led by Delian Capital and Dao Yuan Capital and an initial angel round led by Matrix Partners China, bringing total disclosed funding to roughly RMB 300M since the company's 2025 founding.
Competitors
BCI-Sonics sits in a crowded and fast-moving field. In China it competes with invasive-implant players like Alibaba-backed StairMed and NeuroXess, which is building a dedicated implant factory, both further along in human trials. Globally its closest approach-match is Merge Labs, Sam Altman's ultrasound-and-molecular BCI startup that raised a $252M OpenAI-led seed at an $850M valuation, and Neuralink itself, which last raised at a $9B valuation. China's BCI market is forecast to approach $11B by 2030, giving room for multiple approaches, but non-invasive ultrasound BCI remains scientifically unproven at the depth and precision invasive electrodes already deliver.
VC lens
Would YC fund it? Not in its current form: the round size and syndicate already look like a well-backed Series A story rather than a seed-stage bet, and YC would want to see the founding team earlier, before institutional money had priced the science.
Biggest risk: Focused-ultrasound neuromodulation has real published science behind it but has not yet been shown to match implanted electrodes for reading fine-grained neural signals; if BCI-Sonics cannot close that precision gap in human trials, it risks becoming a well-funded neuromodulation therapy company rather than the true brain-computer interface its funding round implies, while better-capitalized rivals like Merge Labs pursue the same non-invasive bet with far more capital.
