Why today

Positron closed $875M on September 10, a $375M Series C plus up to $500M Series C-1, at a $5B valuation, five times its mark from seven months earlier. Netscape and SGI co-founder Jim Clark personally anchored the extension alongside NEA, Atreides and the Qatar Investment Authority.

Problem

LLM inference is bottlenecked by memory bandwidth and cost, not compute. Nvidia GPUs reportedly realize under 30% of theoretical memory bandwidth on real transformer workloads, and OpenAI and others are openly looking for alternatives.

Product

Atlas systems, shipping now, already match H100 performance at under a third of the power. The next-generation Asimov chip (TSMC 3nm, taping out at the end of 2026) pairs with the Titan rack to run on ordinary smartphone-grade LPDDR5X memory instead of HBM, claiming 90%+ bandwidth utilization and up to 26x more tokens per dollar than Nvidia Blackwell.

Traction

50+ Atlas racks are already live inside Oracle Cloud, with customers including Parasail, Jump Trading and i3d.net. Positron has raised five rounds in under three years, each bigger and faster than the last.

Team

Founded in 2023 by Thomas Sohmers (Thiel Fellow and processor-architecture veteran), Edward Kmett (ex-Groq) and Barrett Woodside. CEO Mitesh Agrawal joined from Lambda, where he scaled its AI-cloud business into the hundreds of millions in revenue.

Funding

Seed ($23.5M, Feb 2025), Series A ($51.6M, Jul 2025), Series B ($230M at $1B+, Feb 2026), then Series C and C-1 ($875M at $5B, Sep 2026). Investors include NEA, Valor, SemiAnalysis Capital, Cisco, Qatar Investment Authority and Naver Ventures.

Competitors

Google TPUs, AMD MI400, OpenAI's in-house Jalapeno silicon and DeepSeek's V4.1 Flash. Positron's wedge is memory economics, not raw compute.

VC lens

Would YC fund it? Long past that stage: this is now a $5B growth-equity story.

Biggest risk: The chip the whole valuation rests on doesn't tape out until the end of 2026 and won't reach mass production until H2 2027, giving Nvidia and AMD a year to keep moving.
